AboutJacques-Louis David
Jacques-Louis David
French (1748-1825)
Jacques-Louis David was an influential French painter known for his neoclassical style, which reflected and shaped the aesthetic and political currents of his time. Born in Paris in 1748, David rose to prominence with his cerebral history paintings that aligned with the moral austerity of the late Ancien Régime and the revolutionary ethos thereafter.
David’s art was deeply intertwined with his political life. A fervent supporter of the French Revolution, and later Napoleon, his works such as “The Death of Marat” and “Napoleon Crossing the Alps” are iconic for their embodiment of revolutionary and imperial ideologies. His style is characterised by its focus on moral rigor, simplicity, and purity of form, drawing from classical ideals as a means of engaging with contemporary issues.
After the fall of Napoleon, David was exiled to Brussels where he continued to paint and influence European art. His legacy as a teacher and painter left a lasting imprint on French art, making him one of the key figures in the transition from Rococo to Neoclassical styles.
